The salary range for this position is $72,800 - $80,080 annually depending on qualifications and experience. The City’s benefit package includes a 6.8% of annual salary match to the Wisconsin Retirement match, Basic Life insurance, Income Continuation Insurance, and Health Insurance. Additionally, the City offers a group Dental plan, Deferred Compensation, Voluntary Accident Insurance, vacation, sick leave, 11 paid holidays, and longevity pay.
The City of Ashland, Wisconsin is seeking an Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer. Ashland (est. pop. 7,841) is a progressive, small city located on the pristine shores of Lake Superior and approximately 60 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. Tourism is an important part of the area’s commerce, along with its historic downtown business district. New housing and economic development is underway, positioning Ashland for continued growth and expansion over the coming years.
The Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer assists the Public Works Director in managing and overseeing the Public Works Department, including supervising and managing employees and making professional engineering recommendations and decisions in all areas of transportation, storm water management, water and wastewater system, parks, trails, facilities and grounds. The Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer position performs a wide variety of civil engineering work in planning, design, plan and construction review, contract initiation and management, special project coordination/management, and other similar functions. Special projects related to the City’s parks, trail networks, water quality initiatives, private development, buildings, grounds, landscaping may also be assigned.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university, and five or more years of relevant field or office experience to include three years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A background in construction project management, with a focus on water and wastewater utility operations, and demonstrated knowledge in the preparation of plans, specifications, and contract documents is preferred.
